About Us
"Hawk" (aka Tony Diaz) served in the U.S. Marine Corps from Oct 1971 through Jul 1973 after enlisting during high school. During Boot Camp at Parris Island, he trained with the M14 Rifle and qualified as Sharpshooter . It was while in the Corps that Hawk was given his nickname after a night of compass marches through the North Carolina swamps. Hawk was stationed overseas at Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan, (thus the e-mail addy of ButlerMarine) in direct support of the 3rd Marine Division which was deployed in Vietnam. He remained on Okinawa until his rotation back to the states and early release from active duty as the Military was downsizing at the end of our involvement in Vietnam.
Some years later Hawk realized that he could purchase one of those M14s even though it was a civilian version. After purchasing a nice tiger walnut stock from Orion7 and refinishing it, he brought it back to show the owner, and was solicited to refinish stocks for them. Hawk refinished a number of M14, M1 Garand and M1 Carbine stocks for Orion 7 in the early days of his Dummy Kit business. When Orion 7 moved to it's current location, Hawk purchased several hundred stocks and even more hand guards from Orion 7 that he has refinished and offered for sale on this website through the years.
After Building his first rifle from a Armscorp receiver which was barreled at Orion7, and after seeing that unsightly hole where the selector went on the real M14s, Hawk came up with the idea for the Dummy kits. After several modifications and changes the kits have evolved into what is currently being offered on this site. With the sale of dummy kits taking off, Hawk no longer had time to do stock refinishing, so he had to forgo it and put his efforts into making Dummy Kits.
Hawk retired from his regular job in 2007 due to medical issues, and has spent his time producing his kits as well as overseeing and participating with the remodeling of his second home up in the Catskill mountains.
Due to his disabilities, Hawk will be "Officially" retiring from making dummy kits on 31 December 2021.
